Guest speaker: #untrashy provides sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic. Founded by Ness and Tim Heffernan late last year, they had a vision to empower individuals to be conscious consumers by providing stylish and affordable zero-waste swaps. They also support businesses in reducing their environmental footprint and are involved in several local campaigns.
Living by the beach, ocean conservation is something they are both very passionate about. They are surf lifesavers, conduct beach cleanups and are AUSMAP micro-plastics accredited. During their honeymoon abroad, Ness and Tim were overwhelmed by the amount of plastic pollution they witnessed and felt compelled to do something good.
Tim has previously worked in sub-Saharan Africa with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and Ness recently facilitated a number of consultation workshops with a remote Indigenous community in Western Australia to develop their 5-year environmental health plan. Ness and Tim met during postgraduate study at the University of Sydney and together they are using #untrashy as a platform for advocacy, education and change.
